Black Beauty was born in a kind farmer’s stable. He had a pure blood-relation, and was black all over, with the only exception of his right foot and a small mark on his forehead in the shape of the star. After a strict but not cruel training, he was sold to a rich man. He showed all of his noble characters: loyalty, bravery, wittiness, perseverance, kindness, and so on. That period was the happiest time in his life: getting good cares, drawing his master’s entire attention, and making many friends. But soon, Black Beauty began his miserable life; He was sold to another owner Earlshall, the ruthless hostess who insisted that the horses in her house must wear bearing-reins, because she thought the reins can help them have imposing manners. Ginger one friend of Black Beauty, couldn’t tolerate the torment any more, and began to resist. Unfortunately, she got severe punishment. But Black Beauty just tried hard to endure the unfair treatment day after day, because he was always in the hope that the situation will become better in some day. However, things were not as simple as he thought. At last, Black Beauty’s knees got wounded because of a foolish stableman. He looked so ugly that he was sold again. Later, fortunately, he met a cab driver who was so kind to him. Although his work was laborious at that time, he still felt very happy. Black Beauty was then sold to a baker after the cab driver changed over to another job. And from then on, he always had to do overloaded work. This still was a little better for Black Beauty, because after a short time, he was resold to another cab owner who was very hard and unfriendly. He preferred to use a whip with a metal end to lash Black Beauty and once the owner almost exhausted him, which made him bordering on death. No matter how terrible the condition was, Black Beauty always bore the misery silence by himself, because he always believed that life would become better in some day. And at last, his hope became true. He met the stableman who had taken care of him when he was a pony, and began his happy life with this kind man. Most of his friends had died for periods. He survived at last. All these should be due to his determined belief and perseverance. According to Black Beauty’s experience, we can see how poorly the horses were treated by ignorant humans. Having read this book, you will know that horses as a kind of living creatures are like a special gift of “God”. They also have feelings of pain and love; though they are strong and fast they are submissive to human manipulations. But sadly, human seldom be considerate towards animals with enough mercy and wisdom. The story ended with Black Beauty finally living with a kind master. But in my opinion, this end showed the author’s kindness that in her book Black Beauty had a good end.
